A testament to being OC 20 September 2009

Filed under: arki days, plate, random — estudyanteredux @ 17:10
That’s OC as in Obsessive-Compulsive, not Orange County.
While I was rummaging for scraps and reusable boards to use to make frames for our upcoming ID114 exhibit and the scaled model I’m making, I found one of my old plates from 2005.
Yet another proof of my OC-ness to detail. LOLz

It’s a conceptual design for an art supplies store. It also foreshadows my interest in interior design.

Icon FAIL or WIN? 19 September 2009

Filed under: application, architecture, interview, organization — estudyanteredux @ 18:51

Design Core interview day today, we were asked to go to CHE at a certain time, and to wear business attire. I did as told, but prior to this I was wondering how the interview would be conducted. We weren’t given anything to memorize, like the org’s history or preamble as what we used to do in ASAPhil. We weren’t asked to prepare any “special talent”, and I doubted we would have to “perform” anything since we would be interviewed in the open-to-all-who-cares-to-look tambayan. Finally, there were about 9 of us lined up for a one-on-one interview in the morning (9-11am) and another batch in the afternoon (1-3pm). Computing the time for each interview, it would add up to about 10 minutes each. It’s too short a time for any special gimmicks or life-changing experiences, unlike the hour-long closed-door interviews I’ve experienced (and conducted) in the past. On these grounds, I didn’t see any reason to be nervous.

True enough, the interview was short and to the point. we had questions to answer, but they’re more for getting to know one’s character than about the org itself. There was one question, though, that they asked everybody: Who is your icon?

What do I answer to that? I was told that it could be a fashion icon, an inspiration, hero, whatever. I didn’t want to stay any longer, so I answered Frank Lloyd Wright.

Little did I know that the question was asked for a special purpose. We were supposed to be dressed up as our “icon” on the Apps night/party.

Right. So I’m going as an old man.

It actually wasn’t so bad, once I thought about it. :)

The funny thing is, I’m not alone. A female co-applicant answered Frank Gehry :D We’re gonna be two old men!

More modelmaking! 18 September 2009

Filed under: arki days, miniature — estudyanteredux @ 22:55

Making scaled models was the highlight of every semester in Arki for me. I don’t know why, but the prospect of problem-solving and strategy-making for scaled models are so exciting to me. Then the act of cutting, gluing and constructing itty-bitty details give me a sense of calm. It’s like doing arts and crafts. The act of making them is as satisfying as the end product.

Given this, it isn’t a surprise that I was so enthusiastic to take the lead for this ID24 modelmaking project: Chinese courtyard house. And we have to make not just one, but TWO!

I volunteered to do the sketch model of the whole house. Yes, I love scaled models that much.

Walk like an Egyptian 16 September 2009

Filed under: chair, furniture, miniature — estudyanteredux @ 16:19

For ID114, each student was assigned a style/period in Western furniture history. We are to make a miniature chair and its corresponding interior for an Exhibit on the 23rd. I made mine between the 12th to 16th of September, because we had to have our work checked by 11:30 on the 16th.

I CRAMMED! Well, unintentionally, at least. I was actually enjoying the activity because I’ve always loved making scaled models in Arki. That was the highlight of every semester for me. That’s also one of the reasons why I made a miniature for thesis even though it wasn’t required. I took a lot of photos while I worked and posted them online since I was so happy with what I was doing, especially the chair.

I must’ve been enjoying too much that I wasn’t able to manage my time so well, and I ended up working until the very last minute. Thankfully I wasn’t penalized for arriving at school a few minutes past the due time. I had my work checked and got my comments for improvement which I should work on before the class begins the setup for the exhibit next week. Whew!

Another unsatisfactory report has come and gone 15 September 2009

Filed under: class, groupwork, interview, report — estudyanteredux @ 23:42

ID10 report day: Everything seems to be falling out of place, yet in place at the same time. I wasn’t so panicky so I suppose that helped a lot. We did have video, but our audio couldn’t be understood and our video editor wasn’t able to include subtitles so we were forced to do an on-the-spot oral report. Thankfully Alaina brought a copy of the interview transcript I made before so we divided the questions amongst ourselves and talked our heads off while the video kept running in the background.

Our report was well-received and there wasn’t much criticism. Alma Conception even praised our presentation, even though I wasn’t satisfied at all. That’s my high expectations and perfectionism for ya. But I guess the simple fact that we’re finished with this requirement makes me feel good enough to let it slide. :)

Looky what I found! 11 September 2009

I went to Arki Lib to research about Egyptian Architecture/Interiors since most of the history books are there. As I was browsing through the shelves I gravitated towards this thin book which wasn’t related to my search topic at all, yet for some reason I took it out and opened to the first page. This is what I saw:

Interesting choice 8 September 2009

The Main Library’s refurbished Media Services section has an interesting feature: a red plastic chandelier. Contrasting starkly to the plain and utterly normal space, it’s a quirky and playful thing that brightens up the room (only figuratively, because I have yet to see it lighted). :)

facepalm moment 4 September 2009

Filed under: class, plate, rendering, watercolor — estudyanteredux @ 20:02

I woke up early today to prepare the things I have to bring to school. The deadline for submission of our latest ID24 motifs plate has been moved to today. I was actually finished with painting, and all I had to do was write down the captions and book sources.

In the middle of ID114 class, it came to me: I forgot to bring my plate.

I had already placed and fastened it in a folder, together with the piece of paper which had the text that I needed to write. And I left it on top of my desk. Great.

Thankfully, Nanay mentioned to me when she dropped me off that Tatay would be going out around lunchtime. So I messaged him asking if he could swing by and bring me my plate. I gave detailed instructions on where the folder was and its exact contents. By 11:30, I got my folder! Yay! I went about writing the text I lacked and when I finished, I thought I would be able to submit it. FAIL. It was past 12 already and the CTID office was closed for lunch.

Good thing Tatay waited for me and we had lunch waiting for 1pm. That’s when I was able to submit my plate. Also, there were two 30″x40″ illustration boards for each ID student at the department so I got to bring mine home because I had a ride. These, along with some other paper products given before, are supplied to the students for use in their plates. These are paid for by the lab fees for studio classes included in our tuition. We didn’t have that in Archi, that’s for sure.
